The 2025 theme for Summer Reading was "Color Our World". As you can imagine our programs were filled with activities and crafts that focused on art and color. We met every Wednesday morning in the month of June with each week having a different theme.
The first week's theme was Rainbow Day. We read a book about an old woman who swallowed a rainbow. After that we made rainbows in a jar with cotton balls and paint and rainbows out of colorful pompoms. Each of the children had a chance to paint their hands and cover the library windows with hand prints. They all thought that was a lot of fun.
Our theme for the second Wednesday was Artist Day. On this day we read a book about school children painting a mural on the classroom wall and one young artist's struggle to paint the perfect sky. Bruce Becher, former art teacher at Wilber Clatonia Schools talked with the children about finding things to inspire them to draw and paint. Each child was given a small sketch pad to drawn on. That day the children showed their artistic talents by painting rocks and creating coffee filter butterflies.
Week three's theme was Colors Galore and gave us a story about how some crayons saved the rainbows. The children made suncatchers out of clear glue and colored beads. They also made colorful necklaces out of dyed pasta. The WCHS Cheerleaders were here and did face painting which the children really enjoyed.
The final week was Messy Art Day and it really lived up to its name. We read the book appropriately titled "Splatter" by Diane Alber. The children were able to go to 4 different stations that had tins of paint and different tools they could use to make splatter paint pictures.
At end the program, and this year's summer reading, all the children had a chance to spray silly string at our rainbow balloon arch. They had a great time.
